"I wish I was like So-and-so.” “She did this and it worked, so I’m going to do that too!” We’ve all been there. How often do we find ourselves chasing after other peoples callings?
It’s so easy to pick up what others are doing when we are searching for the one thing God is calling us to do. We naturally try on all those ministries like we would a new dress or a pair of jeans or shoes. We want to see what will fit.
However, that is not the way God hands out assignments. He isn't hit or miss. When we tune in to His voice, we find He is precise, direct, and compelling.
Life is hard, isn't it? We may truly want to serve God and do His will, but so many voices compete for our attention. Too often we fall prey to the pressures of man, the voices of reason and control of others, and of course the enemy detouring us to keep us from fulfilling our destiny.
Be encouraged! You were born individually and uniquely with a specific purpose, plan, and assignment that only you can fill.
We can read great books or see inspiring movies of people like Billy Graham, Brother Yun, Francis Chan, Sheffey, Corrie Ten Boom, George Mueller, and more. God uses the testimonies of others, such as Abraham, Noah, Moses, David, Daniel, and even Jesus to increase our faith, to inspire us to find our personal calling, and to assure us that the same God who moved in their lives will move to accomplish the assignment He’s given us.
Yet too often we think we have to take on someone else’s assignment. We spend years trying to be like someone else. We fail because, well, it just doesn't fit. It was never meant for us. We aren't called to build an ark, put our heads in a lions mouth, or be nailed to a tree. And there will never be another Savior.
God distributes assignments throughout the Body of Christ in order to do the work He needs us to accomplish. If everyone wanted to be a missionary, or everyone wanted to be a full-time evangelist, or everyone wanted to run an orphanage . . . Get the picture? These are all great things, but they may not be meant for you or me.
Sure, we all speak from our passions. Some of us seek to help the poor, others share the good news from a platform, while others do missions. At the end of the day, there is no assignment more or less important than another.
We should never put down the work others are doing for Christ just because their assignment is different from ours. God forbid! We need everyone in the Body to participate and fulfill their own God-given assignment to fulfill the Kingdom agenda.
Let us not be hoarders of God's work, nor braggers, as if we have the corner market on the most important work. It is all important. Diversity is needed, individuality is valued, and God uses it all for His glory, not ours.
Encourage others in what He has called them to, and enjoy doing the one thing God has equipped you to do. Do not mimic, copy, imitate, or even confiscate what others do. It is not only exhausting, it’s counterfeit.
Does anyone acknowledge the working of Christ in you? Give the encouragement you would like to receive.
Yes, what we do takes time. Yes, we have to focus on our own assignment. However, standing beside others who are doing a work and encouraging them lasts far beyond the few seconds it takes to recognize that God is working in and through them.
Do you feel like what you do isn’t a good fit? It may not be for you. Read, watch, and learn from others. Let them inspire you that God is so faithful and true to do His work in you. Don't think you have to go to a third world country, or speak to thousands, or hand out food to the needy to be accepted and found worthy of a calling.
It took me a long time to get this. I groped in the darkness behind the scenes for a long time before I found my fit. I wrestled with God for years before understanding He called me to serve women, set the captives free, encourage others in their journey, and help women discover spiritual, emotional, and physical wellness. God hand picked me for my assignment, and it fits!
Are you groping, trying to find your calling? Ask Him. He will tell you! I promise, your assignment will fit you well.
If you are called to pray, then pray. If you are called to give, then give. If you are called to teach, then teach. Do it all to the glory of God, make your calling assured, and bless others in the Kingdom work.
Folks, we need each other. We can’t do this life alone. That is why God made us family, brought us into the Body, calls us a church. He desires unity and that we would all function as one as we use our diverse gifts to advance the Kingdom.
What about you? What area of ministry has God called you to? Have you found your fit? Are you still searching? Join the conversation!
You are positioned by God and highly favored! With much love for the brethren!
"For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.” 2 Corinthians 10:12
